31 Juli - 12 August
http://www.utrechtsummerschool.nl/index.php?type=courses&code=S2
This year’s focus:
Examples of peace and human rights education in Asia
Art and creative educational approaches

In our world, many conflicts exist. In general, political and financial investments in violent strategies are much higher than investments in non-violent conflict resolution. Therefore, the United Nations propagated the development of a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. It strives to change those mechanisms and evidences of cultures which legitimate the use of violence in conflict at every level of society. Peace and human rights education for all is an important tool to develop and promote strategies and competencies which can contribute to cultures of peace.

The summer school ‘Peace and Human Rights Education’ builds on the idea of an education for peace and human rights, as it is formulated by the UN Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010). This year, special emphasize will be placed on 1) Asian case study examples of peace and human rights education 2) the role of arts and creative educational approaches (photography, music, drawing, movement, media, etc.) as a response to situations of injustice and violence.

You as a student, a teacher, a social worker, a politician, civil servant or parent, will explore Peace and Non-Violence with its basic characteristics of Human Rights and Social Justice. You will also get an understanding of the potential of peace and human rights education, both as a content and as a methodology. This summer school will offer a mix of academic theory (knowledge and reflection) and practical applications (decision making exercises and action). We want to challenge you to develop your own body of knowledge and opinions which can help you determine your position in your own situations.

This program takes place in an international setting and provides social opportunities and excursions. Join us as we visit United Network of Young Peacebuilders, Fort Democracy (interactive art installation), Living Library (Challenge your own Prejudices), the Malukku Museum, and you will receive training from high quality speakers (academics and practitioners).
